Released on 10/5/07 on 8daysaweek.co.uk:
Ubuntu Linux v7.04 (Feisty Fawn)
(Edubuntu Linux, Kubuntu Linux and Xubuntu Linux also available)
We are now an "authorised distributor of Ubuntu CDs".
If "Linux" is something you've never heard of, if you know only a little about Linux, or if you think that the Linux Operating System is confusing, then you will be pleasantly surprised by Ubuntu Linux.
Ubuntu offers you a complete Linux-based operating system,
including all the major applications you need to play and work. With a strong focus on a desktop that
Just Works, Ubuntu is a great choice for home or the office. The base system and all included software is free, and support is available from the community or by professional support providers.
Ubuntu Linux has a Graphical User Interface (or GUI)
(familiar to Windows users) and is
easy to install and use. Another advantage of Ubuntu Linux is that it is Open Source, and includes a "Package Manager" that allows you to list all the (free) Open Source software available for Ubuntu Linux on the Internet. Just pick the software you want and the package manager will download and install it for you! This makes installing programs on Ubuntu Linux
easier than installing software on a Windows Computer!
When installed, Ubuntu Linux
already includes many programs, including OpenOffice.org.
Ubuntu 7.04 is the most user-friendly Ubuntu to date and includes a ground-breaking Windows migration assistant, excellent wireless networking support and improved multimedia support.
What's available?
Things have changed slightly with the release of v7.04 (Feisty Fawn), and we don't carry the Ubuntu produced CDs of
all the versions available
(all versions are available though, some are on CDs we produce ourselves - as previously), so even if you were familiar with earlier versions of Ubuntu, you may want to take note of the following:
There are 2 main Editions of Ubuntu:
- Desktop Edition
Try Ubuntu on your computer, without changing any existing settings.
Simply put the Desktop CD into your CD drive and restart the computer.
Ubuntu linux will load and you can try it out. Remove the CD, restart the computer and your usual Operating System (perhaps Windows?) will start up as usual, with nothing having been changed.
NB. Ubuntu will probably run much slower from a CD than when it is installed on your computer.
You can also install permanently from the same CD if/when you decide to.
Installing Ubuntu is very easy and takes only approx. 20-50 minutes in total.
The Desktop Edition is available for:- PC (Intel x86) - including the newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.
- 64-bit PC (AMD64) - e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon
System Requirements
At least 256 MB of RAM. Install requires at least 2 GB of disk space.
8daysaweek.co.uk supply the Ubuntu produced Intel x86 CD of this version.
For other types of computer we supply CDs we have produced.
- Server Edition
- Built on the solid foundation of Debian which is known for its robust server installations.
- Security by default. The Ubuntu Server has no open ports after the installation and contains only the essential software needed to build a secure server.
- In around 15 minutes, the time it takes to install Ubuntu Server Edition, you can have a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) server up and ready to go. This feature, exclusive to Ubuntu Server Edition, is available at the time of installation.
The LAMP option means you don't have to install and integrate each of the four separate LAMP components, a process which can take hours and requires someone who is skilled in the installation and configuration of the individual applications. Instead, you get increased security, reduced time-to-install, and reduced risk of misconfiguration, all of which results in a lower cost of ownership. - Includes thin client support using LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project). LTSP-5, the latest release, offers a simple installation and easy maintenance.
The Server Edition is available for:- x86, AMD64 and UltraSPARC T1 architectures.
There is also still an Alternate install CD available. The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer. It provides for the following situations:
- creating pre-configured OEM systems;
- setting up automated deployments;
- upgrading from older installations without network access;
- LVM and/or RAID partitioning;
- installs on systems with less than about 256MB of RAM (although note that low-memory systems may not be able to run a full desktop environment reasonably).
In addition to the types of computer listed above, there are also "unofficial" Ubuntu editions available, these are supported by a community team:
- Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) - For Apple Macintosh G3, G4, and G5 computers, including iBooks and PowerBooks as well as IBM OpenPower machines.
- IA-64 - For Intel Itanium and Itanium 2 computers.
- PlayStation 3 install CD - For Sony PlayStation 3 systems.
We supply all of the available editions, however there are slightly different prices and longer delivery estimates for the unofficial versions. Please see our Order pages for more information.
