Hi Jutta,

I think the method described in the Mon Jan 24, 2005 7:07 pm post is the right way to do it.

Have you checked whether the document is using a different page style for those pages which are no longer displaying the number :?:

That't the only thing I can think of that would stop the number displaying. The effect you describe is usually what happens if you use the "offset" method instead which was also posted on 24th (Mon Jan 24, 2005 11:32 am). Which post were you referring to?

BFN,
James :)

That was exactly the problem. Now it seems to work :D

Thanks a lot

I've just been through this tutorial in OOo2 to check that everything works.

Apart from one place where the text in a dialogue box is slightly different (which I've commented in the post) things seem to work the same for OOo2, so I've moved this topic into the OOo2 forum.

The topic can still be found in the OOo1 forum, but doesn't appear as a Sticky in there, just in the list of topics.

numbering

Postby brianspittle » Thu Dec 01, 2005 10:57 am

I have followed the tutorial as closely as I can. Please don't ask me to read it again. All I want to do is number a book of 150 pages. I have removed headers and footers, and go through the process again and again, winding up with grey shaded Page Numbers in the selected part of my header. Where please do I go from there to number the complete document from 1 to 150. Could someone give me plain insttructions on how to proceed?

Hi brianspittle,

Perhaps this (from above) will help)?:

Numbering

Postby brianspittle » Fri Dec 02, 2005 2:16 am

Paul
I have managed to number a blank and an existing document starting from 1 but when I follow the instructions to start from another number it asks me to place cursor in first para of text. When I follow the rest of the procedure and then OK I find I have moved the text from the first few pages in an haphazard order.
What I would like to know is how to change the number from 1 to a higher number without catastrophe. These are the procedures I followed:

This issue provides a link to another guide where there are these instructions for starting page numbering at a number other than 1:

Place your cursor in the header or footer of your document.

Insert the page number, click Insert > Fields > Page Number. The page number will be 1.

Place your cursor in the first paragraph in the text area, or type a paragraph of text if your document is blank.

Click Format > Paragraph (or right-click and choose Paragraph from the pop-up menu) to display the Paragraph dialog box.

Click the Text Flow tab. In the Breaks section, select Enable (OOo1) or Insert (OOo2), With Page Style, and the page style you are using for the first page of the document.

The Page number field is now active. Type the page number you want to start with. Click OK to close the Paragraph dialog box.

Do not set a starting page number that is an even number or you will get a blank page after the first page.

Thank you for past advice.

Hi brianspittle,

I have just followed these instructions again with a multi-page document and everything worked as expected.

I can't understand how changing the page number could cause the text to move at all :?

You mentioned in your previous message that you had removed Headers and Footers, I assume you have reintroduced headers and footers now, and that this is where you're inserting your page number? Are you using the same page style throughout your document?

If you can uploaded your file, or send me a PM with the file attached, I'll have a look at it for you.

BFN,
Paul

Thanks! Finally found the answer here - it works!

Postby Bouquet » Mon Dec 19, 2005 10:45 pm

Thanks, Paul.
I spent hours yesterday formating a book, but could not figure out how to number the pages consecutively and dynamically. Your tutorial fit the bill for me.

I didn't really want the word "page" before each number, so I skipped on to the next step with the field for page numbers, and presto - all as it should be!

It was a temptation to press on with my busy day, but thought I'd come back to say thanks.

page numbering mysterious

Postby memmerich » Tue Dec 20, 2005 7:08 pm

Hello there,

I want to have some pages of front matter in my doc, so page numbering
starts later. What was a great hint from this thread was inserting a manual page break with the 'change page numbers' checkbox checked and to enter a new number. This works great for the first page after the break, it really shows '1' as wanted.
But: the next page also is numbered '1' ! After that, things go like expected...
ever heard of this? any clue would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
best regards
Martin

Problem dissappeared!

Postby memmerich » Fri Dec 23, 2005 4:21 pm

Hi,

I just wanted to clear the alarm - the next day, things had grown the right way, and there's no double-1 any more.

BTW, I just printed my diploma thesis and my experiences with OO2 were really pleasant!

Thanks to the community!

I really hope my eyes didn't just skip some paragraph, I looked over this tutorial a few times. The previous tips helped a lot in understanding how things work.

How do I get page numbers of odd (right) pages to the right, and subsequently to the left on even (left) pages.

If it's is covered elsewhere, it ought to be added to this thread.

This comes in handy when printing on both sides.

Best regards, Wed

No, it's not included here. Good idea. I will put it on my "to do" list.

Simple way to numbering pages is to open our document in MS Word.
One click will make it in one second.
What a silly idea is to hide so important function so deeply!!! Sorry, I don't have time to read a instruction book and hundreds of tutorials during work with this software.

Please explain me again, in a way for idiots, how can I put the numbers of sites in existing document.

Paul wrote:[list=1][*]Press Ctrl+F9 (to show field names)

OK. Some weird picture with "help" appeard in right corner. Nothing else. This help contains nothing useful.

[*]The field "Page Numbers" will be shaded grey

Where? I can't see!

best regards

Hi Pisior,

Please read: Sticky: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Most functions in OOo are not actually buried deep, but may be different to that which MS Office users are used to. When I think about the hours I've spent trying to perform simple tasks in the various versions of MS Office, I think the learning curve on OOo isn't a steep as is often made out.

Pisior wrote:how can I put the numbers of sites in existing document.

I don't understand this question, what sites are you referring to?

You can only show field names if you have inserted the fields in the document to begin with.

Paul wrote:9. From the Menu bar select Insert > Fields > Page Number.

Rather than pick and choose at the items you read/quote I suggest you work through the tutorial systematically. It actually only takes approx 5 minutes to do the basics, if you don't have 5 mins then you'll struggle to learn any new software ;)
