Ubuntu Linux v7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon"

You may be surprised to see Linux available on a site that is specifically aimed at end users, but we have included it because Ubuntu Linux is the easiest type of Linux we have found to install (from only 1 CD).  Even better, using the Desktop CD you can try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later.  This type of CD is what most people will want to use.  You will need at least 256MB of RAM and at least 4GB of available hard disk space to install from this CD.

The Alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu.  Click here for details

Ubuntu builds on the latest GNOME operating environment.  Despite the silly name, GNOME provides elegant and powerful software for everything from instant messaging to image viewing, from system configuration to Solitaire.

Ubuntu is part of the Debian family of distributions. As such it has an extremely wide selection of software that is instantly available to Ubuntu users, and includes some of the world's best-regarded software for the management of software updates and changes.

All the hard work has been done for you.  Once Ubuntu is installed, all the basics are in place, including OpenOffice.org and many other programs, so that your system will be immediately usable!

Picture of an Ubuntu CD - will be updated soon! Picture of an Ubuntu CD

For both the Desktop and Alternate versions there are 2 CDs available each for a different type of computer:

1. PC (Intel x86)
For almost all PCs.  This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.  Choose this if you are at all unsure.

2. 64-bit PC (AMD64)
Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon).  If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use an Intel x86 CD instead.

The server install CD allows you to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer for use as a server.  It will not install a Graphical User Interface (GUI).
There are three images available, each for a different type of computer: PC (Intel x86), 64-bit PC (AMD64), SPARC

As authorised distributors of Ubuntu CDs we hold some stock of popular Ubuntu editions, produced by Ubuntu and shipped to us for distribution.  The picture above shows one of these.  When ordering a CD you will see an asterisk (*) next to an "Ubuntu produced CD" all other CDs are produced by us, the Xubuntu CD on this page shows what they look like.  Our CDs are produced from official Ubuntu CD images which are tested before we produce the CDs.  The content of either CD is identical.  If we run out of stock of Ubuntu CDs, or around the time of the release of a new version, we may supply CDs produced by us to avoid any delay despatching your order.

Xubuntu Linux v7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon"

You may be surprised to see Linux available on a site that is specifically aimed at end users, but we have included it because Xubuntu Linux is the easiest type of Linux we have found to install (from only 1 CD).  Even better, using the Desktop CD you can try Xubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later.  This type of CD is what most people will want to use.

To run the Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB RAM to run or 192 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM.

To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 64 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to use at least 128 MB RAM.

The Alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Xubuntu.  Click here for details

Xubuntu is lighter, and more efficient than Ubuntu (which uses GNOME) or Kubuntu (which uses KDE), since it uses the Xfce Desktop environment, making it ideal for old or low-end machines, thin-client networks, or for those who would like to get more performance out of their hardware.

Xubuntu is shipped with top quality packages from the Ubuntu archives.  Xubuntu will use, as far as possible, GTK2 applications, ensuring maximum efficiency.  If you wish, you can install any KDE or GNOME application on your Xubuntu desktop system, as it shares the Ubuntu main and universe package selection.

The current version of Edubuntu is aimed at classroom use, and future versions of Edubuntu will expand to other educational usage, such as university use.

The Classroom Server CD allows you to install Edubuntu permanently on a computer as either a Server or Workstation.  It includes LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) support, providing out-of-the-box thin client support.  Note that the Server CD was known as the "Install CD" in releases before 7.04.

The Classroom Server Add-on CD makes the best out of your Edubuntu by offering additional educational software and further installable languages. It is easy to install the software from there once either a server or workstation has been installed.
